Students may watch reality TV shows like Survivor and the Amazing Race and wish they had a chance at winning these competitions’ big prizes. While they may be too young to become contestants on these shows, kids can experience the next best thing when they help their schools put on obstacle course fundraisers to fund educational travel opportunities.
For a more Survivor-like obstacle course, it helps for schools to be located by the water or in a rural area, as there will be more opportunities for outdoor activities than in an urban setting. However, it is still possible to organize a smaller event in a field or even the gymnasium.
Teachers should decide what types of obstacles students will encounter when they enter the course. They should be challenging enough so that the event will not be a piece of cake. At the same time, they should not be so impossible that no student will want to pay a fee to participate.
Organizers may want to look to rope courses for inspiration and feature obstacles like a wall students must climb over or a zigzag balance beam they must cross. No matter what the fundraiser requires participants to do, there is a good chance students will want to give it a go.
