Philadelphia is the cradle of American democracy. Student groups can explore Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was first issued, and explore the history of the Freedom Trail. Musicians can delve into the art of great American Jazz artists, John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie while exploring the city of brotherly love. Philadelphia also offers side trips to historic Amish country; and if there’s still time, take your students to nearby Hershey for a chocolate treat.

Independence National Historic Park

This historic park contains a wealth of early American history. Home to Independence Hall, a World Heritage Site, and the famous Liberty Bell, your student group can spend hours exploring the numerous sites within this national park.

National Constitution Center

One of the most interactive museums in Philadelphia, the National Constitution Center is home to thousands of exhibits dedicated to our nation’s governing document. Follow the story of the creation of this document and its amendments throughout history in the center’s “We the People” exhibit.

Betsy Ross House

An icon of American history, Betsy Ross’s story involved more than just a flag. Explore her home and numerous artifacts of Revolutionary America through this museum’s unique exhibits.

Philadelphia Museums

Enjoy an afternoon perusing art by Van Gogh and Salvador Dali at one the nation’s largest museums, the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Also take in the “Giant Heart” or famed electrical exhibit at another noted museum in Philadelphia, The Franklin Institute of Science.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Once one of the most famous and expensive prisons in America, the Eastern State Penitentiary is an incredible relic of Pennsylvania’s past. Explore the world’s first penitentiary—a place once home to Al Capone and “Slick Willie” Sutton.

United States Mint

Take your student group through this working facility. Take time to tour the history of the mint and actually see coins made.

Valley Forge

This 3,600-acre park was once the bitterly cold home to hundreds of heroes from the Continental Army. Explore the various exhibits throughout this historic site where then General Washington transformed a rag tag militia of men into the hearty regime that would win independence for our nation.

Lights of Liberty Sound and Lights Show

Travel back in time with this interactive depiction of our nation’s struggle for independence. This walking tour utilizes light displays and dramatic vocal re-enactments in an incredible display of the birth of our nation.
