Relive history in the Land of Lincoln. Home to our sixteenth president, Springfield provides students the opportunity to explore the beauty of the Old State Capitol, Lincoln’s Tomb and artifacts of Lincoln’s life beyond the classroom. Students will also visit the Illinois State Capital, the Vietnam, Korean and World War II Memorials and the Old Ridge Cemetery. Visiting Springfield will allow students to walk the roads paved by the history of the Illinois government.

Springfield School Trip Highlights

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Discover exhibits featuring artifacts from our 16th president’s life in this historically rich museum. Also view the handwritten copy of the Gettysburg Address and a signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation while touring this famous presidential library.

Illinois State Capitol

Sit in on a session of the Illinois House of Representatives and Senate or explore the architectural history of this beautiful state capitol. An architectural marvel, at one time the building was the tallest capitol in the nation and once had water-powered elevators.

Old State Capitol

This Greek revival building has played an important role in American politics. Tour the building where Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided” speech and the grounds where our current president announced his candidacy.

Oak Ridge Cemetery Tour

The Oak Ridge Cemetery serves as the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln. Tour his tomb and be sure to view the Illinois Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials within the cemetery.

New Salem State Historic Site

New Salem State Historic Site is a fully re-created village rebuilt on the foundations of the original Salem site. Once home to Abraham Lincoln, the site is rich in history and provides several park performances throughout the year.

Abraham Lincoln Home

This home, located in a four-block historic district, is the only home that Lincoln ever owned. He lived here with his family in the seventeen years leading up to his presidential election. Rich with artifacts and family records, students will enjoy a more intimate look into the life of our 16th president at this site.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

One of only twenty World Heritage Sites in the United States, the Cahokia Mounds is an important stop for any student of Native American History. Explore the numerous exhibits, Native American artifacts, Monks Mound and Woodhenge within this famous destination.

Arcola, Illinois

Your students can explore Amish life in this quaint town just outside of Springfield. Also be sure to explore the lavish Rockome Gardens while touring historic Arcola.
